Hi, I am an IT admin and have setup Gitea on a server. It can be accessed in local network, but it is not working via VPN.
Port 3000 is also permitted in the firewall policy.
Logs show that firewall is sending traffic to Gitea server, but not receiving any response back. We also have another application on the same server on a different port which remains accessible via local network and VPN both.
I tried to allow the port in Windows defender as well but it did not have any effect.
What could be the issue here? Any ideas please?
if the firewall log shows packets hitting the gitea box but nothing coming back, id start with bind address and app.ini before more firewall rules.
check whether gitea is listening on 0.0.0.0:3000 or only a LAN IP (ss -lntp | grep 3000). VPN clients often land on a different subnet so a LAN-only bind looks exactly like one-way traffic.
also check ROOT_URL / DOMAIN in app.ini. if it redirects to a hostname that only resolves on the LAN, VPN clients die after the first hop even when port 3000 is open. the other app on that box working over VPN usually means the port path is fine and gitea config is the odd one out.
Thanks. I did try that as well, but no luck. it resolved only when i moved the gitea server to another subnet together with my other applications which were confirmed to be working on VPN. So it seems to be some VLAN routing related issue
