Original estimate

You have some time tracking features included in Gitea. But I still don’t see how to set an original estimate, it that is even possible.

Your may set due dates. Time spent is probably less significant than when stakeholders expect to receive a product. Would your agree? Beyond that you could adopt an “Agility” methodology a la Dave Thomas and gang like Kanban to split hairs and measure burn in a separate system. Word of warning though burndown charts are a lie we tell ourselves to burn the midnight oil.

Is that just a long way to say that this is not possible?

Depends on the stakeholder. A stakeholder on customer-side: probably. As a project manager of an IT service provider: only if you don’t care about your team and expect your developers to provide nearly unlimited work hours just to hold a deadline.

Cost estimation is a very important tool in our project management. It’s the foundation for our planning and allows our project management to monitor the overall progress. Are we still in time? What feature can we complete within the next iteration? Do we need more developers? Do we need to reduce scope? All this can be managed by using ETC (estimate to complete). Also, comparing the total cost to the original estimate gives us information about the precision and value of our cost estimation and the possibility to tune things. In the end all of this allows us to detect problems and setup a reliable roadmap.

So, I disagree.

Like I said, why not adopt a tool? As for the rest that’s really up to you. I personally hope Gitea never turns into a tool for PMs. That’s what PM tools are for. Thanks for disagreeing.
