# Error when trying to send an email

I have installed Gitea 1.25.0 to my Synology NAS from the package at the package center app.

I am trying to setup the mailer in order to activate my account, but I have tried every possible way of writing the settings and I still get this error:

> Failed to send a testing email to “aaaa@gmail.com”: failed to issue MAIL command: 555 5.5.2 Syntax error, cannot decode response. My current setup is this:

> [mailer]  
> ENABLED = true  
> SMTP\_ADDR = smtp.gmail,com  
> SMTP\_PORT = 465  
> FROM = aaaa@gmail,com  
> USER = aaaa@gmail,com  
> PASSWD = abcde  
> PROTOCOL = smtps

( **gmail,com** is written like that because the forum doesn’t allow me to have links in my post)

Any idea what is going on?

hi,bro.nice to meet you:  
gmail’s imap and pop3 address is gmail,com,it’s right.  
but gmail’s smtp address in fact is **smtp.googlemail,com.**  
most people in this forum are chinese,so they don’t use gmail.  
and therefore don’t notice this detail.

That error often shows up when the SMTP settings aren’t fully matching what the mail provider expects. It might be worth double-checking the port, encryption type (TLS/SSL), and the FROM address in the config. I’ve also seen cases where the provider blocks the connection until “less secure app” access or an app password is enabled.
